Abstract:Color is the human subjective perception of the objective color world, and color lexicons are the linguistic expressions of such perception. Color lexicons have been approached from different angles, among which the sociolinguistic one is one of the frontier approaches. In a given context, the formation and development of color words reflects the social culture. A sociolinguistic study of SinoJapanese words related to “purple” shows that these words mirror the cultural connotations in China and Japan in terms of costume, religion, literature etc., and can work as a worthy reference for crosscultural study on color lexicons.
