Abstract:In his doctoral dissertation and political commentaries in Rheinische Zeitung, Karl Marx's early thoughts had the basic orientation of modernity, that is, a non-critical standpoint of enlightenment. Early Marx' fundamental practical pursuit is the social transformation from the “traditional” totalitarianism to “modern” liberal democracy. Owing to the inherent theoretical tension in Rheinische Zeitung, his thoughts underwent a change in his “Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right” and aufgeheben the enlightenment principles ultimately. An exploration of Marx's theoretical starting point of enlightenment can help refute the distortion that links Marx to totalitarianism, and of course avoid the reduction of Marx's thoughts to his early standpoint of liberalism.
