Abstract:Derk Bodde is one of the first western scholars of the Qin history. His major contributions lie in three aspects: (1) his dissertation China's First Unifier: a Study of the Ch'in Dynasty as Seen in the Life of Li Ssu, filling the blank left by western scholars in the study of the Qin history; (2) “The State and Empire of Qin”, which he wrote for The Qin and Han Empires, volume one of The Cambridge History of China, asserting that the Qin Empire, although short lived, was historically important; (3) his English translations of four biographies closely related to the Qin history from Sima Qian's Shi Ji(Records of the Grand Historian) and having them printed.
