Abstract:Before the missionaries came to China in 1830s, only W.C. Hunter of American businessmen had learned Chinese seriously. After 1840, the missionaries Elijah Coleman Brideman and Samuel Wells Williams compiled three dictionaries, signaling that Americans learning Chinese had embarked on a mature and smooth way.
