Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common disease. With the increasing cardiovascular risk factors and the aging population, the incidence of AF is increasing worldwide. Patients with AF are at an increased risk of ischemic stroke, heart failure, death and cognitive decline. About one third of AF is asymptomatic or occult, and thus can not be found and treated in time. Oral anticoagulant therapy can reduce the risk of ischemic stroke and mortality in patients with AF. Therefore, screening and specifically diagnosing asymptomatic AF as early as possible is very important for properly using oral anticoagulants and preventing ischemic stroke. At present, the guidelines for early detection and treatment of AF are a few. This paper reviews the latest research progress in ECG detection, and screening and diagnostic methods for AF.
