Abstract The emergence and development of entrepreneurial universities is a new trend in the world′s higher education since the 20th century. According to the international development experience, there are two kinds of development models: bottomup and topdown. By taking a comparative study of development models of two entrepreneurial universities, which are named Aalto University and University of Auckland, the paper finds that the two universities share the characteristics of entrepreneurial universities proposed by the theoretical researchers; however, there are significant differences in terms of the starting point, development strategy, management style and organizational structure. The different development models formed by entrepreneurial universities provide a useful reference for the construction of entrepreneurial universities in China.
