Abstract The Chinese universitys cultural character which is based on the Chinese culture is the fundamental feature to make Chinese universities keep essential. From cultural perspective, the Chinese university is not only a social institution which integrates the functions of teaching, scientific research and social service which are transplanted from the western university model, but a cultural entity which is based on Chinese culture and different from any other national university institutions. Chinese cultural character has been developed for more than one hundred years since the late Qing dynasty which manifested time rationality and historic limitations in different periods. In view of the present condition of the higher education development, it is not only necessary but also quite possible to rebuild the cultural character of Chinese university today. Chinese university should return to the university ideology, revive the long cultural tradition and establish the core position of intellectuals to build the “Chinese university model”. This is the way to foster the ideal model of cultural character for Chinese university in the future.
