Abstract In American colleges, presidents from within the higher education system are often called traditional presidents, and presidents from outside the higher education system are often regarded as nontraditional presidents. The development of nontraditional presidents in American colleges comes with the change of the era and social environment, the change of college president roles, the reduction in the number of traditional president candidates, and the introduction of headhunting companies. These nontraditional presidents have advantages, such as a new perspective to solve problems, a strong willingness to reform, an excellent ability to raise funds and an excellent political ability. But there are also problems, such as college culture inadaptation and college teachers′ disagreement. Under new circumstances, China should return to the role orientation of university presidents, and formulate abilityoriented selection criteria; innovate the concept of university president leadership, and give play to the role of collective leadership; expand sources of university presidents, and create a talent market; improve the selection and appointment system of university presidents.
