Abstract In Australia, under the background of steadily increasing national support, constantly expanding industry development demands and continuous improvement of university practical teaching system, higher education constantly carries out systematic reform in teaching according to the social demand for the ability of practical talents in universities. With the orientation of ability cultivation, the University of Technology Sydney uses the Learning Futures Strategy project to cultivate students′ basic qualities and skills that are required to be engineers in the first years, and to cultivate students′ professional abilities that are needed to solve the engineering problems in real situations in the advanced stage. It sets up a special participating team, builds a special practice management system, unites social forces, creates an open and interactive campus environment, and provides strong support and guarantee for practical teaching. In order to promote the reform of practical teaching in colleges and universities in China, we should use the concept of "ability enhancement" to guide the process of practical talents′ training, emphasize the systematic construction of practical course teaching, and construct a practical talent training management system supported by multiple subjects.
