Abstract:Based on literature on governance of higher education in the United States since 1960s, this paper divides the history of the research on Americas governance of higher education organization into several stages and makes a review of the features of the research at each stage and comments on the major modes of the governance. On the whole, the governance has undergone four stages, namely the initial period, the closed system period and the rational open system period and the cultural open system period. It has changed from a single mode to a diversified mode system, from a structuralized view to an angle of informal relationship and its focus has shifted from internal governance to the influence of the external environment.
