Abstract:Taking for example the speech of university presidents in opening and graduation ceremonies, this paper elaborates on the evolution of Chinese university presidents speech. In the Republic of China, university presidents speeches were usually concerned with the nature of education and the national destiny. In a quite long period after the founding of new China, university presidents tended to make politically oriented speeches, emphasizing the socialistminded and professionally competent feature. From 1980s, their speeches began to present the feature of homogenization, stereotype and arbitrariness due to the strictly administrative selection and appointment. And since 2010, with the graduation speech of Mr. Li Peigen as a symbol, their speeches have entered an age of diversity, which aim to kindle students road under the influence of university spirit.
