Abstract To obtain the temperature variation data of asphalt pavement accurately and quickly, the method of predicting temperature field was investigated. The calculating process of asphalt pavement temperature field was modeled by finite element method. The effects of air temperature and solar radiation on temperature characteristic of asphalt layer were discussed. The maximum temperature on pavement surface was expressed by air temperature and solar radiation, and the correlation of maximum temperature between pavement surface and any point in asphalt layer was established by figure and formula. Based on the daily property of temperature field, the temperature was modeled by cosine function with the parameters of time and depth to calculate the temperature during daytime. The results show that the margin of error between predictive value and calculation is less than 0.5 ℃, which can meet the requirements of engineering application completely. The proposed method of predicting temperature field has the advantage of simplicity with high accuracy.
