Abstract The regenerative braking is currently used to relieve the biggest obstacle of short driving distance for the industrial application of electric vehicle(EV). In order to meet the braking performance requirement of electric vehicle equipped with ultracapacitor, based on the regenerative braking system working principle, a regenerative braking system model was built by exchange principle. Based on DC/DC converter modeling theory of state space average, an energy recovery control strategy was proposed to realize stable deceleration of vehicle braking, and the braking current of motor was calculated by the ultracapacitor voltage and the speed of motor during EV regenerative braking process. A regenerative braking test bench was built to verify the feasibility of the system structure and the validity of the control strategy. The results show that the braking current is in the vicinity of the target value and relatively stable by the proposed control strategy, and the regenerative braking system has high energy recovery rate. The experimental results of regenerative braking energy recovery and control strategy are consistent with the simulation results, which illuminates that the proposed control strategy can satisfy the requirement of engineering application.
