Abstract The three-syllable modem Chinese words LiaoBuDe and BuDeLiao are the result of lexicalization of the negative phrase BuDe that has be lexicalized itself beforehand. Originally they are a verb-complementary phrase and an endocentric phrase respectively. Eventually their phrasal nature weakens and disappears.
