Abstract Gender difference is an important issue in science of science and sociology of science and has been highly concerned and studied by all sectors of the society. The results show that in the humanities and social sciences in China, male scholars are still at the core and play a leading role in academic cooperation. Female scholars are less likely than men to participate in academic cooperation. In the internal structure of academic cooperative team, there are obvious gender homogeneity.
