Abstract:The prefaces to dreamrecording poetry in Yuan Dynasty outnumbered all the previous generations, with richer contents. They can be classified into three types: those on the goddess of fantasy tales, those memories of sages and teachers, and those missing relatives. Some long prefaces are similar to novels, and can stand alone with their unique aesthetic value. In general these Yuan prefaces have three prominent characteristics: poetic creation in dream, supernatural induction, and dream interpretation in preface. Their reading of dreams is based on but excels the similar efforts of their predecessors, embodying the unique cognitive value and theoretical significance of the Yuan prefaces.
