Abstract The tensile and pressure properties of sub-micro and micrometer SiCp reinforced Al matrix composites were investigated to study the effect of SiCp in different scale on the mechanical properties. The results show that SiCp/Al matrix composites exhibit excellent plasticity, and the elongation percentage descends with the increase of the volume fraction of SiCp. Its tensile and compressive strength increase with the augment of the volume fraction. The tensile strength and compressive strength of sub-micrometer SiCp/Al are better than those of micrometer SiCp/Al. The rupture mechanism of sub-micrometer SiCp/Al is that the vacancy zone forms at interface of SiCp/Al and expands in the substrate. The rupture mechanism of micrometer SiCp/Al is the cleavage fracture of SiCp and its expanding in the substrate.
