Abstract An experiment of hydrogen production from co-gasification of biomass and coal was conducted in a fluidized bed with steam as gasifying agent. Two-step gasification process in a fluidized bed was adopted in this experiment. Parametric experiments were performed to determine the effects of reactor temperature, biomass to coal and steam to biomass ratios, which had effect on hydrogen yield. At the same time tar content was investigated on different condition. Experimental measurements of gas composition and rate of output were used to calculate the hydrogen yield and highest hydrogen production. The experimental results show that hydrogen yield and hydrogen yield potential are mainly affected by temperatures and steam. When the reactor temperature is from 950 to 1 000℃, and steam to biomass ratio is 0.9, the ratio of mixture of biomass and coal is 4/1, hydrogen yield is about 68.25 g per kilogram dry ash-free biomass and coal, the highest hydrogen yield potential is achieved as 138.01 g per kilogram dry ash-free biomass and coal.
