Abstract The RC structure under monotonic loading was analyzed, including axial bending and shear effects. Based on the plastic stress-strain theory of multi-axis stress state, and taking into account of shear deformation in plastic region to stiffness of the element, the tangent flexibility matrix which accounts for nonlinear shear deformation of column element during the complex loading was set up. Shear deformations are thus uncoupled from axial and bending effects in the section stiffness, but shear and bending forces become coupled at the element level because equilibrium is enforced along the beam element. The model is validated by comparing calculated values with experimental data on the shear performance of columns.
