Abstract Highly dispersed water-in-oil(W/O) micro-emulsion was prepared by using the compound surfactant m(Tween80)∶m(Span80)=1∶1 as emulsifier,PEG-400 as assistant emulsifier and octane, hexadecane or emulsifier as the oil phase.Methane hydrate was formed in quiescent micro-emulsion system. The results show that the formation rate and methane consumption markedly increase for methane hydrate, while the inducing time and water ratio obviously decrease in micro-emulsion comparing with the pure water system and the system including emulsifier.Organic solvent, which is selected as oil phase, cannot form hydrate and has the lowest solubility in water and the highest solubility in methane. The formation mechanism of methane hydrate in micro-emulsion is also discussed.
