Abstract A simple and novel synthesis method of carbon dots (CDots) was proposed via direct acid hydrolysis of malic acid, ethylenediamine and Lcysteine in onestep hydrothermal treatment. The morphology, structure, composition and optical properties of carbon quantum dots were tested. The optimized conditions for preparation of CDots were determined with reaction temperature of 150 ℃, pH value of 8.0 and reaction time of 24 h. The results show that the novel N,S codoped CDots have uniform particle size distribution and good water solubility. According to Xray diffraction patterns, the prepared N,SCDots mainly consist of C, N, O and S elements, and N and S elements exist in the form of amino group and sulfonic acid group, respectively. The fluorescence quantum yield of the prepared N,SCDots reaches 23.84% with good fluorescence properties for bioapplication.
