Abstract The swell-shrink grade of swelling soil was evaluated based on the cloud model, the improved analytic hierarchies process and the entropy weight method. The five evaluation indicators of liquid limit, swell-shrink total rate, plasticity index, natural moisture content and free swelling ratio were used to investigate 15 swelling soil samples. The cloud digital characteristics of each evaluation criterion were generated based on the swell-shrink grade classification standard, and each evaluation indicator cloud model was established. According to the calculated weights by component weighting method, the comprehensive certainties were obtained. The corresponding quality degree was determined as shrink and expansion grade of swelling soil. The cloud model results show good consistence with the results of certainty measurement method, matter-element extension model and approaching in variable weight. The cloud model method can provide reference for similar engineering problems with high classification accuracy.
