Abstract To reduce the energy consumption of hydraulic power steering(HPS) system in commercial vehicles,a new type electronically controlled hydraulic power steering(ECHPS) system was designed based on the proportional solenoid valve bypass flow control. The handing stability and the efficiency of new type ECHPS were investigated. The power balance among all modules of ECHPS was analyzed. The energy flow model of ECHPS system was established in Matlab/Simulink with consideration of energysource feature of ECHPS. Using fuzzy PID strategy of proportional solenoid valve opening control, the multiconditions were simulated, and the fullscale vehicle experiments were conducted. The results show that the simulation results are consistent with the experimental results, which proves the efficiency of energy flow model.Compared with HPS system, the ECHPS system energy consumptions are reduced by 7.0% and 15.6% under noload and fullload conditions, respectively. The sense of highspeed road from the view of driver subjective feeling is significantly improved.
