Abstract The silica aerogel was synthesized by solgel process and dried at ambient pressure. The silica aerogelsupported phosphotungstic heteropoly acid (PW/SiO2 aerogel) was prepared by impregnation method and used as catalyst for FriedelCrafts acylation of pyrene with benzoic anhydride to prepare fine chemical 1benzoylpyrene. The asprepared catalysts were characterized by specific surface area measurement, Xray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and temperatureprogrammed desorption of ammonia. The results show that 40% PW/SiO2 aerogel has optimum catalyst activity in acylation reaction with 75.9% yield and 100.0% selectivity for 1benzoylpyrene after reacting at 60 ℃ for 40 min under ambient pressure. The PW/SiO2 aerogel catalyst has good catalytic activity after running for five times, which indicates that the catalyst can be used repeatedly.
