Abstract Objective: To evaluate the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG) electrolyte solution plus bisacodyl on the quality of bowel preparation in outpatients. Methods: Three hundred and sixty outpatients registered for colonoscopy were randomly divided into the experiment group (2 L PEG + 10 mg bisacodyl) and the control group (2 L PEG). The rate of adequate bowel preparation was assessed by the Boston bowel preparation scale (BBPS) and adenoma detection rate, cecal intubation rate and adverse reaction rate in two groups were analysed. Results: The rate of adequate bowel preparation in the experimental group (91.1%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (77.2%, χ2=13.028, P0.05). Conclusion: PEG(2 L) combined with 10 mg bisacodyl may significantly improve the quality of bowel preparation in outpatients and increase the adenoma detection rate, without increasing the risk of adverse reactions.
