Effect of lowdose dexamethasone on blood glucose concentrations in operative thoracic surgery patients |

Abstract Objective: To determine the effect of low-dose dexamethasone on blood glucose concentrations in thoracic surgery patients during the first 8 hours after administration. Methods:Ninety patients undergoing selective thoracic surgery were divided randomly into three groups: saline group, dexamethasone 5 mg group, and dexamethasone 10 mg group. Before anesthesia induction, dexamethasone 5 mg and 10 mg were injected intravenously in relative group, respectively. Normal saline was given in a group as control. Blood glucose concentrations were measured at baseline (before anesthesia induction) and 1, 3, and 8 hours after administration. The incidence of hyperglycemic events (At any giving time blood glucose concentration>10 mmol/L) was determined. Results:Compared with baseline, blood glucose concentrations in three groups significantly increased at 3 h and 8 h timepoints. But, the blood glucose concentrations did not differ significantly between the groups receiving dexamethasone (either 5 or 10 mg) and those receiving saline at any measurement time. The incidence of hyperglycemic events did not differ in three groups. Conclusions: Administration of low-dose dexamethasone before anesthesia induction did not influence blood glucose level in thoracic surgery patients during the first 8 hours after administration.
