Abstract:bjective: To study the value of exploratory eye movement examination in the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or earlystage Alzheimer disease(earlystage AD). Methods: The subjects were divided into three groups: individuals with mild cognitive impairment(MCI), patients with earlystage AD, and normal controls, with 30 cases in each group. All the subjects were evaluated with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment(MoCA) and underwent exploratory eye movement examination. The measures of exploratory eye movements include number of eye fixation(NEF),responsive search score(RSS) and discriminant analysis value(D value). The measures of exploratory eye movements were compared among three groups, and the associations between MoCA scores and the eye movement measures were examined. Results: There were statistically significant differences in NEF,RSS,and D value among the three groups(P<0.01).MoCA scores were positively correlated with NEF and RSS(P<0.01) and were negatively correlated with D value(P<0.01) in MCI group and earlystage AD group. Conclusion: Exploratory eye movement examination may be used in distinguishingindividuals with MCI or earlystage AD,and the measures of exploratory eye movement may reflect the severity of cognitive impairment.
