Abstract The late Qing novel Xianxia Wuhua Jian was firstly attributed to Shanghai Swordsman, who was, according to some literatures, thought to be none other than the Shanghai Stone Washer (Sun Jiazhen), the writer of Haishang Fanhua Meng (A Dream of Shanghais Bustling Life). Other literatures did not say who Shanghai Swordsman was and left the later readers in doubt. However, we can infer from the preface and the content of Xianxia Wuhua Jian whom its author was. In fact, such literatures as Tuixinglu Zhushu Tan, Baohai Qianchen Lu, and Shushisheng Liushi Changhe Ji make it clear that it was a knight errant novel written by Shanghai Stone Washer and published before Hai-shang Fanhua Meng, when knight errant novels were rare and few. So, it is obvious that Shanghai Swordsman is none other than Shanghai Stone Washer.
