Abstract Both ancient philology and linguistics in China had their explanatory functions. The study of language was put into a book of Mingshu（ancient Chinese lingustics）,and its explanation was a part of Ming Xue,which is the study of concepts and logic. The book of names Er Ya and other ancient works all have their logic. As an archaeology of knowledge they had own academic background and thoughts. Early Chinese philosophy teems with linguistic explanations and metaphor.
