Based on the method of characteristic, the boundary condition mathematical model of horizontal air vessel is built and the numerical calculation formula of pressure and water level in the vessel is deduced. According to the fluid transients numerical simulation of the vertical and horizontal air vessels under pump-stopping, the results show that both the vertical and horizontal air vessels can effectively protect the pump-stopping water hammer; with the same shape parameters, the variation of water level in the horizontal air vessel is smaller than that in the vertical vessel, and the horizontal air vessel has a relatively better protective properties for water hammer than the vertical air vessel. As for a given volume horizontal air vessel, there is a best restric-ted orifice for water hammer protection. Under the prerequisite that the water of the air vessel supplied to the pipeline is enough, increasing the initial gas volume and installation elevation of horizontal air vessel will make the protective effects on water hammer better.ª¤
