Abstract Study on the ecological environment protection and drought early warning. The temporal and spatial changes of the normalized differential vegetation index of Liaoning Province from 2000 to 2016 were analyzed based on MOD13A2 data of MODIS remote sensing image. The correlation between normalized difference vegetation index and precipitation was studied. The results showed that the spatial distribution of the NDVI is more obvious in Liaoning Province. It shows that the eastern was the highest, central and south west was higher, lower in northern, the lowest in western. The annual variation of NDVI value in Liaoning Province shows a trend of increasing fluctuation, and the vegetation coverage is increasing. The seasonal variation of NDVI value in Liaoning province presents a single peak type. The maximum is basically in July, and the minimum is in May. There is a correlation between NDVI and precipitation. There is a certain lag between the NDVI and precipitation.
