Abstract In order to understand the water resources carrying capacity and water resources security in Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin. Under the condition of the regional natural endowment water resources, economic, social and ecological environment in Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin. A coupled weighted TOPSIS Model and a comprehensive evaluation index are used to evaluate the water resources carrying capacity and water resources security for the four secondary regions in Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin as well as the main influencing factors were analyzed. The results show that the water resources carrying capacity in the four sub-regions shows an increasing trend under the time dimension, and the water resources security of the Longyangxia area pretends an decreasing trend, while it is an increasing trend in other regions. In terms of spatial dimension, the water resources carr-ying capacity in the four sub-regions suffers a critical state. The water resources above Longyangxia area are relatively safe, the Longyangxia-Lanzhou area and the Longmen-Sanmenxia area are in a cri-tical safe state, while the Lanzhou-Hekou town area is in an unsafe state. There are significant diffe-rences in the influencing factors in different regions and periods, in which the factors like water pollution, contradiction between supply and demand, low ecological water consumption and other factors are the main reasons for the spatial and temporal differences of regional water resources carrying capacity and water resources security. At the same time, it is the first attempt to use the same index system and classification standard to calculate the closeness degree of water resources carrying capacity and water resources security comprehensive evaluation index of water resources security, and analyze the relationship between the two indicators.
