Abstract Medium-sized and small-sized pump stations usually provide the water inlet condition for the pump with the sump. Therefore, the good or bad condition of flow in the sump directly exerts an influence on the flow field of the pump inlet and consequently leads to poor pump system performance. Studied on the development of the research on the flow pattern of sump and illustrates its influence on the flow field of pump inlet. The method of the research on the flow pattern in the sump is discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the methods are analyzed.
