Abstract The threedimensional microscale models of flow domain between two matching rings with spiral grooves in a dry gas seal was built by Solidworks,then the steady laminar flow in the models with various gas film thicknesses was numerically calculated by Fluent.At a special condition,a gas film thickness,which allows both the opening force in the film and the leakage through the film can achieve optimal values simultaneously,was determined based on the predicted dynamic pressure effect and radial flow velocity.For a series of gas film thickness,namely 3.5,4.5,5.5 μm,the effects of surrounding pressure and rotational speed of rotating ring on the leakage and power consumed were investigated.The results showed that a better dynamic effect and less leakage are obtained with the film thickness of 3-6 μm; moreover,the best dynamic effect and minimum leakage are achieved at the thickness of 3.5 μm.The leakage and power consumption rise linearly with increasing rotational speed as the film thickness and surrounding keep to be constant.Similarly,the leakage and power consumption arise linearly with increasing pressure as well when the film thickness and rotational speed remain unchanged.
