Abstract:The abnormal operation of large- and middle-sized driving motor with journal bearings due to excessive temperature rising caused by shaft axial travelling is investigated experimentally on the spot and then analyzed theoretically. It is recognized that such operation results from the bending of pump shaft caused by the radial loads when the motor-driven single volute pump operates beyond designed conditions so that the shaft offset cannot be compensated by means of shaft coupling with nylon pin bolts. It is suggested that the double volute configuration and shaft coupling with elatic ring pin bolts should be adopled for the large-sized centrifugal pumps to avoid the axial travelling of the rotor of the driving motor.
