Abstract:The main hydraulic problem for low specific speed centrifugal pumps namely lower efficiency, drooping head-flow curve and easily overloading brake horsepower are introduced and the fundamental requirements for modern hydraulic design are discussed. The recently developed hydraulic design methods for low specific speed centrifugal pumps including the greater flow design, non-overload theory, splitter-blade method, area ratio principle and optimum design are reviewed. The advantageous and disadvantageous for these methods are discussed and compared. It can be concluded that as long as selecting the proper design method and with his own experience, the designer can develop the satisfactory low specific speed centrifugal to meet the user’s specific hydraulic requirements. The trends for further development are also prospected here.
