There are elbows in the suction pipe of spent fuel pool(SFP)cooling pump in passive pressurized nuclear power plants. These existing elbows can result in nonuniform flow conditions to the pump, and subsequently can generate a certain negative impact on pump performance. In this paper, the performance curves of a horizontal double-suction centrifugal SFP cooling pump and the velocity distribution at different positions in the pump are compared between different inlet flow conditions to clarify the impact based on numerical simulation methods. The results show that these nonuniform inlet flow conditions affect a little on the pump head and efficiency. Even though a noticeable distorted and disordered flow condition does occur at the inlet of the pump, its impact can be weakened by using a special entry design such as convergent section and elbow chamber to eliminate the negative impact. It is proved that the special entry design can rectify inlet flow velocity profile and depress adverse impact on the pump performance. A long suction pipe is no need to the pump in pipeline design of passive pressurized nuclear power plants.
