Hydraulic torque characteristics of guide vane at turbine mode in a pump turbine

Based on hydrodynamic torque test of the guide vane with the highest head in turbine mode of a pump turbine, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is used to analyze the flow field characteristics. Standard k-ε twoequation model is used in steady simulation. SST kω twoequation model is used to unsteady simulation and the internal flow field characteristics analysis. The results show the efficiency inaccuracy between the numerical simulation and the experimental values within the allowed range. The numerical simulation results of the hydraulic torque are consistent with the experiment results in all openings. When the opening is 13 mm, there is a reflux and vortex flow in the vaneless space and the runner filed. When the opening is 49mm, boundary layer separation flow is found on the guide vane suction surface close to the trailing edge. The torque value of guide vanes has similar change regulation to the static pressure value changes near the guide, and the torque value fluctuates periodically in a small range.
