Abstract Regional distribution of universities reflects the stable resource allocation of regional higher education in certain historical periods, and reflects the relativity between university changes and regional economic and social developments. Regional distribution of universities is of great significance for higher education development and even regional economic development. This paper first analyzes current situation of Xinjiang ordinary universities, and then further discusses the relativity and differences between regional distribution of ordinary universities and regional economy in Xinjiang, and finally proposes countermeasures and suggestions to coordinate and balance the interaction between regional distribution and regional economic development in Xinjiang. The paper proposed measures to optimize regional distribution structure of Xinjiang universities, promote the benign interaction between regional distribution of universities and regional economic development, and hopefully boost economic development and maintain social stability in Xinjiang.
