Abstract The present study examins faculty mobility by using the birth and the development of the prototype university and the derivative university in medieval times as the research subject. An analysis of the frequency and the direction of teacher flow as well as the factors affecting faculty mobility indicates that mobility is the innate gene of academic profession and the flow of teachers plays a key role in formation of academic profession, establishment of academic norms, attainment of academic freedom and improvement of the attractiveness of academic profession. It also indicates that the development of universities has been surprisingly consistent in history. The essential features of the teacher flow in medieval times have not been changed and analysis of the historical process of faculty mobility should not be avoided when policies related to teacher flow are being made.
