Abstract The modern university statute dates back to the Middle Ages in Europe. Its fountainhead includes the scholar guild statute, the statute issued by the municipality before the birth of medieval universities, and the inner faculty and the native association statute, besides the charter and imperial edict from the magisterium and the imperial authorities. The gradual institutionalization of the university statute since its beginning in the Middle Ages has been driven by the academic factor. In other words, the origin and development logic of the university statute reflect the university logic as an academic community, namely the academic principle.
