Abstract Engineering spirit, manifesting itself in engineering project and it′s correlations with human being, society and nature, refers to the spiritual states and personality traits of community of engineering, in the goaldirected pursuit of transforming natural world by consciously applying specific engineering science and technology, and precisely abiding by requisite procedures, design documents and specifications in connection with the conceiving, designing, constructing and operating of engineering activities. With universality, practicality, dynamic development, dominance, comprehensiveness, and groupment as basic features, it covers conscious engineering thinking, will and emotional activities, as well as unconscious mental involvement. Engineering spirit is becoming more and more plentiful with the historical development. In particular, engineering spirit focuses on the development of the inherent law. By using the methods of history review and logical analysis, this study analyzes the connotation and specific composing elements of engineering spirit from four levels: epistemology, functionality, social relations and values.
